Doinuak Melodies

Painting, Drawing, Land Art

The rhythm of the traditional Basque instrument, the txalaparta, inspired this work, Doinuak. A wooden wall—nearly a mile long—once ran for decades along the dunes at the far end of Zarautz beach, drawing a line between sand and the golf course.

Painted bands left deliberate gaps, turning sound into space—like the txalaparta, whose music is built from strokes and silences. The kinship between wall and instrument was poetry: six colors beating time, a visual score of melody and pause. The wall is gone now, but the rhythm remains. Close your eyes and you can still hear it—six colors in the wind, a melody carried by dunes and memory.
